"My journey with the transgendered community began 6 years ago, when a client shared with me that she was a transwoman who wanted to transition. While we had worked together for some time, I had no training in this area and did not feel competent to help her with her transition. I consulted with a certified sex therapist, who felt that as long as I received training and supervision, I could help my client. Thus my journey as a gender therapist began. Since that time I have educated myself by talking with transgendered people about their lives, reading applicable literature and attending workshops. I am a member of both the Harry" target="_blank">http://www.hbigda.org/">Harry Benjamin International Gender Association (I attended their conference in Texas last October) and the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT)" target="_blank">http://www.aasect.org/">AASECT). I am also working on my certification as a sex therapist. Currently, over half of my practice involves treating transwoman, transmen, and their families; I provide individual, couples, and group counseling. I consider myself a guide more than a therapist—I am a coach, counselor and teacher. I have found that my background as a nurse psychotherapist, as well as my education in helping people with medical, social, community, and family issues, has uniquely prepared me to assist my patients.
